Muhammad Badrul Hisham Bin Ismail ("Badrul") lives in the state of Selangor, just outside
of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At 20-years-old, he was the youngest observer to
participate in ANFREL's mission to Afghanistan for the parliamentary election in 2005, and this
was his first experience doing election-monitoring work. For the mission, Badrul was based in
Shebergan, in the northern province of Jowzjan.
Kamal Perera was based in the southern city of Kandahar for Afghanistan's parliamentary
election in 2005. Kamal works as an observer for People's Action for Fair and Free Elections
(PAFFREL) in his home country of Sri Lanka, and has observed elections in Thailand,
Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.
Yuli Rustinawati was deployed to Kunduz, a northern province. She works for the Independent
Election Monitoring Committee (KIPP), an Indonesian member organization of ANFREL, in her
hometown of Jakarta, Indonesia.
Sri Lestari Kadariah lives in the town of Palembang, on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. In
2005, she was deployed to Kandahar to observe the parliamentary election, after participating in
ANFREL's mission to observe the presidential election in 2004. Lestari was part of the
Indonesian KIPP team - the Indonesia's Independent Election Monitoring Committee.
Virasak Khamphee ("Johnny") lives in Bangkok, Thailand, and partnered with Badrul to
observe the parliamentary election in Shebergan. Proficient in five languages, Johnny has
previously worked with ANFREL as a translator for election observations in Thailand.
Taibah Istiqamah lives in the city of Banjarmasin on the island on Kalimantan in Indonesia.
She was deployed to Mazar-e Sharif, a major northern city in Balkh province, to observe the
2005 Afghanistan election. Together with Yuli, and Sri Lestari Kadariah, Taibah was a member
of the KIPP delegation - Indonesia's Independent Election Monitoring Committee.
Amin Shah B. Iskandar ("Black") was the Malaysian Team Coordinator for the 2005
ANFREL mission to Afghanistan. Black served on the ANFREL secretariat team stationed in
Kabul. In 2004, he was deployed to Quetta, Pakistan as part of ANFREL's observation team to
monitor out-of-country voting for Afghan refugees during the presidential elections.

Somsri Hananuntasuk is the Executive Director of the Asian Network for Free Elections
(ANFREL), she is based in Bangkok, Thailand. During the Afghanistan mission she was based
in Kabul as part of the ANFREL secretariat team, and served as the Mission Coordinator. She
has worked with ANFREL since its inception in 1997.
Herizal Hazri served as ANFREL's Project Advisor for the 2005 observation mission in
Afghanistan. In 2004, he was the Mission Coordinator for ANFREL's observation of
Afghanistan's presidential election. Herizal also has experience observing and coordinating
ANFREL missions to East Timor, Indonesia, and Cambodia, among others. He currently works
as a Program Specialist at The Asia Foundation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he also
resides.
Rojanaphruk Pravit is a correspondent for The Nation, one of Bangkok's leading English
language dailies. As part of ANFREL's secretariat team in Kabul for the 2005 election
observation mission, Pravit served as ANFREL's Media Officer and worked closely with the
observers throughout the country to aggregate and synthesize reports from long-term observers.
In addition, Pravit was responsible for building relationships with local and international media
to disseminate information on ANFREL's findings during the mission.
Damaso Magbualis the Secretary General of NAMFREL - the National Citizens' Movement for
Free Elections in the Philippines, which was the very first election monitoring organization in
Asia. He has trained civic and religious groups on election monitoring, served as an international
observer in several elections, and been a consultant and trainer on electoral systems,
administration, and reforms.
Gothom Arya is one of the founders of ANFREL. Formerly an election commissioner in
Thailand, he is currently the director of the Research Center on Peace Building at Mahidol
University in Bangkok. He is also Chairman of the Foundation for Children's Development, the
Sub-Committee on Social and Political Participation and the National Commission on Women
Affairs. He is a member of the Committee of the Foundation for Handicapped Children, Vice
Chairman of the Association for the Promotion of the Status of Women, a Board Member of
FOCUS and an Adviser to the Asia Forum for Human Rights and Development.
